Annie Lennox on Madonna's topless magazine shoot
Madonna has never been one to shy away from making a statement, so it’s hardly surprising the Queen of Pop opted to pose topless for a new photoshoot.
However, fellow songstress Annie Lennox has questioned the 56-year-old star’s motivation for doing the risqué shoot in Interview magazine.
Although Annie, 59, has no issue with women wanting to show off their bodies, she isn't sure about the message Madonna is trying to make other than to shock.
‘I think already the verdict is probably out, would you not agree on that one? I think the question is, “What is Madonna telling us? Anybody know?”’
Panelist Janet Street Porter interjected, by saying: ‘I think it's attention seeking.’
To which Annie agreed: ‘I think it is.’
The striking images, taken for the publication by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, show Madonna contorting her body into various positions in boudoir-style underwear, basques and other sexually suggestive garments by Alexander McQueen.
The Why hitmaker has previously been outspoken about modern pop stars who rely on their sexuality to sell their music, describing their behaviour as ‘self-molestation’ and a ‘devaluation of women’.
Meanwhile, the Scottish star also spoke about her impending 60th birthday, which is on Christmas Day, confessing she is proud to be approaching the milestone age.
The former Eurythmics star said: ‘Yes I made it, into the sixth decade! Some people don't like to say their age, I'm almost 60 and I'm proud to say that.
‘Although I shouldn't have said that, I should have said “I'm grateful”, because I'm healthy and when you get to this stage in life, every day is a health miracle.’
Stealing the limelight: Annie, 59, appeared on Loose Women on Tuesday to promote her new album Nostalgia
